A memo written to members of Augusta Country Club, the course neighboring Augusta National Golf Club, stated that ANGC had purchased land from the club in order to lengthen their famed 13th hole, part of historic Amen Corner. While the memo did not state how much the deal was worth, rumors have put the price around $30 million. Augusta National has a long standing policy of withholding comments regarding club business, so it is unlikely that we will get many details from their camp. Their had been mounting rumors that Augusta National and the governing body were looking to add length to the par-5 13th, but Augusta Country Club had been uncooperative up until this proposed deal. With today’s modern equipment, historic courses like Augusta National have faced the challenges of increased distance among tour pros and ensuring that their courses can remain relevant and challenging enough for today’s game. While some members might not be happy that the front nine at ACC is getting a little bit of a face lift, the money that the club is receiving from the deal will no doubt benefit the course as a whole.
